Cucurbit flute, whose Chinese name is “Hulusi”, is a kind of national musical instruments in Yunnan province, China. Because of the unique & beautiful timbre, the classic appearance, the mellow and elegant sound and the easy blowing method, it is loved by a number of music lovers.
The cucurbit flute is a kind of reed pipe musical instrument. It is composed by a gourd and two (or three) of bamboo tubes. The blowing mouth is on the upper part of the gourd, and the three bamboo tubes connected with the gourd are sound tubes, among which the longest and thickest one in the middle is the main sound tube. There are six finger holes on the front side and a hole (the seventh finger hole) on the back side of the main sound tube. There are also a sound hole and two lacing holes on the bottom of the back side.
The vice sound tubes are installed with the reeds (without finger hole) and inserted on the left and right side of the main tube. Take out the cork in the bottom of vice tube in playing, then the vice tube will make a sound with the main tube together. While the vice tube can only make one tune. If the main tube and the vice tubes are unplugged together in playing, 3 tubes would make sounds together. However, the melody will only come from the main tube and the vice tubes would only make a harmony effect in single a tone which will make the sound dim but beautiful.
Hulusi is often used to play folk songs, and it's most suitable for playing music or dance music with smooth melody. Generally there are more long melodies and the combined tones varied. The music is more beautiful and harmonious, so it can express the thoughts and feelings of the player in a better way.
The ""three-tone"" means that all the three tubes of the Hulusi can make sounds with the deputy tubes on both sides. The deputy tubes of other Hulusi may be accessories.
The longer deputy tube can make a bass sound.
The shorter deputy tube can make an alto sound.
If the buckle of the tube is opened, the deputy tube will make sound. Usually the deputy tubes are not used by a beginner.
